Major Lessons Learned in Human as a Person and Logical Fallacies Topic

HUMAN AS A PERSON

We are not perfect.
All of us makes mistakes.

We have the right to tell anyone what we want to tell them. We have our right to share our thoughts to the people whom we want to share it with. But...

People have the right to choose who they want to believe in. Who they want to follow and praise. We all have our own freedom of speech. They have their own dignity to stand up for especially what they believe in.

We are all entitled with our own rights and integrity.

"To be a human is to be a fellow human being" - Martin Buber
This quote from Martin Buber really stroked me among all the sayings of other Philosophers. Because it is true that we are just all human beings and if we want to be treated fairly, we should really treat other people the way you want them to treat you. For some it's hard because not all of us can control what we do. We should be fair to everyone so that people will treat us back, fairly. :)

LOGICAL FALLACIES

This is one of my favorite topics. It really is true. There are a lot of Logical Fallacies that we use in our everyday life. I enjoy it because it's something really catchy, though terms are not memorable, I mean too catchy to catch your minds but when you get to understand the fallacies you would really be amazed. Fallacies are our common mistakes or reasoning. That makes it really interesting. Because we don't notice we are throwing fallacies already in our daily life. There are really many many kinds/types of Logical Fallacies but what I learned in this topic is that, no matter how we try to explain something we will and we will still commit one of the fallacies. It's part of our lives now. Even if we don't notice it we still commit it. But not because we commited a fallacy doesn't mean we're a bad person, sometimes people use it to explain their side or to express themselves.

Ethical Dilemmas for Psychologists

TOP SECRET

Confidentiality

  • I have experienced being counseled by a councilor many times. I started consulting our Guidance Counselor during my High school days. I never thought i'd survive high school. So what i did was, i regularly go to our Guidance counselor and ask for opinion or ask her what to do or even just go to her office so that I can tell her what happened to me the entire day. I became a regular in her office. Every break time i go to her and tell her almost everything about me. She would give me advice for my problems.
Confidentiality takes place when there are the two of you talking. Especially when it's a secret or it's something really personal and not meant to be said in public. But there are times that we should keep a secret, and sometimes spill it out when it concerns health and life. Especially when someone is in danger or it concerns suicide. In order to prevent it, you will seek further help in order to prevent the suicide from happening.

Conflict of Relationships

  • Trust me, I've experienced a lot of conflicts in relationships and you cannot avoid that. Psychologists might help you become less hot tempered or just counsel you. In our daily life, one way or another there will have conflicts or "Sabit/Gusot" in our life. We cannot avoid that people make mistakes and we should not for-long the conflict. Everything must be settled right away so that there will no gaps or misunderstanding furthermore. Just like what happened to me and my best friend before, we had a conflict rather a misunderstanding and I was so happy that we were both mature enough to face it and talk about it. While we were talking we shared our thoughts and opened up our minds so that we could understand each other and luckily we fixed our problem and now we're still best friends. :)

Bag of Money

Payment

  • There are a lot of people who are in need of financial help. And as of now, the current news about a girl from UP (University of the Philippines) died because she cannot afford to pay her tuition fee anymore. I'm not sure about the story but I heard that she can't pay her tuition anymore and the school did not allow her to enroll anymore. In my field, If I know that the client is not capable of paying the bill, I will just give my counseling for free. But if he/she is capable of paying i would let him/her pay. I don't want to force them to pay for the bill if they can't afford because that's a burden to them and pressure also. I know the feeling of it so I don't want to make them feel that. It's really hard.

Crime Scene Do Not Cross

Forensic Psychology

As a psychology student, I really think that we should tell the truth. Because the truth will set you free, and the truth will lead you to the right path. I don't have any experience in forensic psychology since i'm not yet a graduate and i have no plans of being a psychologist kind of lawyer. Or anything to do with the court. It's just that I am not into laws and stuff like that. but I know the laws and I am aware of the do's and dont's in our society. i know what forensic psychologist do. I know that they handle child custody cases or any family related cases in court. It is their job to fight for the better life of a child and the rights or parents and other family related cases.

Values and Consequences

Value and consequences. Values are the one's we live in. It is something important or worth fighting for. Especially when you have your values you stand up for it. You don't let other people look down on you like they know everything. Since your value is important to you, You fight for it. Consequences are the ones you get for doing something. Consequences occur especially when you did something bad or against other people. When we are asked to tell the truth we tend to be nervous if we're hiding something. And admitting that you did something bad doesn't make you less of a person but it makes you a better person because you told the truth and that's what matters. Based on my experience... I have proven myself that it is really better to tell everyone the truth than to lie. because lying will only lead you to several lies more. But if you tell the truth. It will make you feel a lot better and not just that. it will clear your conscience and who knows,? You might gain other people's trust again :)

Major Lesson Learned in Philosophy Class

What have I learned...

I learned so many things in philosophy. I may not have liked it at first............ Because i'm not interested with Philosophy at all. But things change in time. I tried to like it bit by bit and it made like it a bit also. I always try recite so i would pass the subject. It's an additional points for me.

Topics discussed in Philosophy are really deep. You always have to analyze everything. You have to think and think and think again and again and all over again. But no matter how hard it is for me to understand Philosophy and try not to fall asleep during class, I still enjoy the thinking exercise. =))

As my professor always call me... "Yung babaeng mahilig mag iPad 3" That's what our professor describes me before he calls me up for recitation. Haha. I find it funny because it's true. I always use my iPad. couldn't last a day without it! All my files and powerpoints uploaded in our group are saved there so it's like my life. :)) basically I find my iPad really essential for my studies. because you see, all files that our prof sends me, it's there. I use it to study and it's  kind of useful.

But over-all, I still thank God that he gave an opportunity to have this kind of subject. I enjoyed every discussion and  it makes me feel better if i understand things because of Philosophy. Philosophy made me realized that things have advantages and disadvantages, negative and positive sides. That we should not take a story with one side only. We should also look for other's perception, or another point of view.

Now that the end is near,I mean end of our Philosophy class, I would like to thank Sir Enriquez because I still learned something even if I don't remember all the topics we've discussed. I still thank you for all the patients and for being understanding.

Philosophy will never lose an argument. It always have a counter-attack. Like the saying "Di nauubusan ng bala" And also, Philosophy has taught me that the world is what we wish to be, it is simply what it is. I mean, the world's not perfect. it's like a human. It has flaws, and we should accept it just the way it is. Just like our relationship with other people, we should not forget that we make mistakes also, and we should not hate other people for having mistakes and/or flaws. We should really accept it, just the way it is because we cannot control other people's actions.

I guess... That's it. :)

Questions of Good and Evil

Questions of good and evil, right and wrong are commonly thought unanswerable by science.

But Sam Harris argues that science can -- and should -- be an authority on moral issues, shaping human values and setting out what constitutes a good life.

In every system of morality, which I have hitherto met with, I have always remark’d, that the author proceeds for some time in the ordinary ways of reasoning, and establishes the being of a God, or makes observations concerning human affairs; when all of a sudden I am surpriz’d to find, that instead of the usual copulations of propositions, is, and is not, I meet with no proposition that is not connected with an ought, or an ought not. This change is imperceptible; but is however, of the last consequence. For as this ought, or ought not, expresses some new relation or affirmation, ‘tis necessary that it shou’d be observ’d and explain’d; and at the same time that a reason should be given; for what seems altogether inconceivable, how this new relation can be a deduction from others, which are entirely different from it.”

Harris justifies his position by asking his audience to consider under what circumstances we feel that we have moral obligations: “Why is it that we don’t have ethical obligations toward rocks? ... Because we don’t think that rocks can suffer. ... [talking then about insects having a very limited inner life] This is a factual claim, this is something we could be right or wrong about.” He continues: “If culture changes us, it changes us by changing our brains. And therefore whatever cultural variation there is in the way human beings flourish can at least in principle be understood in the context of a maturing science of the mind,” implying that neurobiology — the field in which he is getting a doctoral degree — will soon be the key to moral discourse.
The talk at this point takes a sharp turn, where Harris aims his fire at moral relativism, though he never actually mentions the term: “Just admitting that there are right and wrong answers to the question of how humans flourish will change the way we talk about morality.” Taking the example of several States in the US that allow corporal punishment of children, he asks: “Is it a good idea, generally speaking, to subject children to pain, and violence, and public humiliation as a way of encouraging healthy emotional development and good behavior?”

The final argument of the talk is supposed to reinforce the analogy between moral and scientific expertise, both of which are non-arbitrary: “Most Western intellectuals ... say, well, there is nothing for the Dalai Lama to be really right about or for [serial rapist and killer] Ted Bundy to be really wrong about. ... [One] likes chocolate, [the other] likes vanilla. ... Notice that we don't do this in science,” at which point Harris proceeds to compare differences of opinions about an expert in string theory and himself, claiming that the expert gets the right of way quaexpert. “This is just the point, ok, whenever we are talking about facts, certain opinions must be excluded. ... How have we convinced ourselves that in the moral sphere there is no such thing as moral expertise?”

Science and Virtue

What is Science and Virtue?

Most of us might not now what is Science and Virtue, especially if you're not from Centro Escolar University. So what is Science and Virtue (Ciencia Y Virtud, as the term used by Escolarians)

Centro Escolar University - Gil Puyat Campus

I have been studying in Centro Escolar University since 2011. I will not deny the fact that, Centro Escolar University never crossed my mind when I was given a chance ti decide on which University I am going to. Sadly, I wasn't able to pass the entrance exam of my dream school. But luckily, i found Centro Escolar University. I didn't have any idea of College would be like. Knowing I just graduated Highschool that time, I was really clueless. I wasn't even sure if this is what I really want.

Then first day of college came, I didn't know what to expect i didn't know what to do exactly. I kept smiling to people i don't know. Haha. Now I find it awkward. Never did it crossed my mind to be as active as I am now.

(Please do not get mad at me for posting our 1st day picture! So nene. Haha)

I notice a changed in me as time pass by. Almost 2 years had passed. And things change. But as I continue my college life at CEU, I realized a lot of things. I may have been immature for the past years since college started. I have been insensitive and stuff like that. I have always been the girl they call "KSP" or "Pa-BIDA". Yes, that's true. I always want all eyes on me. Because I was immature. I will not deny that a part of me is still immature. All of us still have that part one way or another. Haha. Anyways, but as time pass by, I have learned and not just learned but nasaisa puso ko na yung SCIENCE AND VIRTUE (Ciencia Y Virtud). Not fully but a big part of me live with it now. :)

Science and Virtue for me is like, excelling in academics. AND NOT JUST ACADEMICS but also in other or EXTRA CO-CURRICULAR Activities such as Organization Activities or events. I am happy that I was able to show and express my skills in our department/program. I became the Public Relations Officer of Psychology Society during my 2nd Year. And now that I am about to end my Sophomore Year, I ran as the Assistant Treasurer of USC (University Student Council) I am overwhelmed because I won. But a part of me still feels bad about not running for my first family, the Psychology Society because they expected a lot from me and i don't like the feeling of  "I failed their expectations".

Science and Virtue is like the sound of the body. It has all the factors in it, it helps you being who you are today, and it aids you to be good and gives you the positive side of life. Science and Virtue comes in various aspects of life. One very good trait that science and virtue gives us is responsibility and obedience. This two traits can help us students be more productive in everyday life. Having control over and accountability for appropriate events and willingness to obey, to be controlled when necessary, and to carry out orders. When you say responsibility it is not just of taking over. It is how you manage or how you control a specific task.

The bigger the responsibility the harder it gets, and the quote “great power comes great responsibilities”. The more you should get bigger responsibilities in life because it is a big part in our lives to be responsible in enough in taking control of things we needed or want. It’s like practicing your capabilities in such work. And of course being obedient is one of them. Being obedient is not only when you do what is commanded or what is being asked. It is how you interpret, how are you willing to do it and how to carry out the orders given. There is this quote “obey first before you complain”.

This is true because why won’t try it first before you say no or quit. In Science and Virtue we are taught to be individuals, how we stand our ground and how we show and express it to people. Science and Virtue is not limited in school work or in business associated, it is applied and have been part of our lives ever since. For example being friendly is a tendency to be pleasant and accommodating.

It can also be applied in relationships like commitment, the firm carrying out of purpose. Meaning Science and Virtue is everywhere you may not know it but you are already practicing it in your life. And it all leads down to discipline, being well behaved and under control. Because you know that you can do it, you have the push to achieve it and you have the heart to pursue it. "Everything in life that we really accept undergoes a change.." Katherine Mansfield, British author (1888-1923)- acceptance is a must. Just P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens)

I am not graduating yet. I still have 2 more years to fulfill and 4 semesters to pass. But at this early point of my life, I can really tell that Science and Virtue has been challenging me everyday to prove that I can do something.

Major Lessons Learned

Major lessons learned are that there are big difference between Philosophy and Science. Philosophers like to start with their conclusions and work to prove them.  When it came to trying to figure out what the world was like, philosophers tended to argue about what the world should be like.  Science was born as a rejection of this method.  Its goal was to figure out what the world was really all about and its primary tool was actual experimentation.

We've all seen philosophy at its worst.  Philosophers are often completely disconnected from reality and more recently, don't care. It's not surprising science would want to distance itself from philosophy.  It becomes even more personal for the scientist when he's told that he must conform to preconceived views of the world.

Science vs Philosophy

1. What are the similarities and differences between Science and Philosophy?
2. Write a SHORT CRITIQUE PAPER ABOUT THIS ARTICLE:
Philosophy Is Not a Science
By JULIAN FRIEDLAND

There is a definite distinction between philosophy and science. Philosophy and science may be somewhat confusing for many because of their interrelatedness most especially that there are many arguments between them. Many sciences depend on philosophy and vice versa. Science is best likened to the human mind while philosophy is to the human heart. Science, in general, seeks to understand natural phenomena. It is more concerned on empirical evidences and testable hypotheses. By empirical, it means that which can be observed or experimented on. By contrast, philosophy is vaguer. Defining it in one concrete sentence may not define it entirely. I would say the difference between science and philosophy is that of certainty and doubt. Where science is based upon certainty to study the strange, unexplained and chaotic. Philosophy in general is a skeptical study of everything. It is based upon doubt as the starting pointing. Where scientific empirical approach would seek to prove every theory wrong and therefore through the methods of elimination reach the one that cannot be proven wrong and therefore, a philosophical mind would not allow itself any such station of certainty until it could simply doubt no more.

The author implies that we need to restore philosophy as the "mother of all knowledge." I agree with the author. Logic and math are not proven by science, they are presupposed by it. Indeed, there are many forms of nonscientific and objective knowledge. Through introspection (not science), I know I certainly exist. Through Logic (not science), I know all animals are either rabbits or nonrabbits. Through math (not science), I know 2+2=4. Through language (not science), I know all bachelors are unmarried. Philosophy still may have a place in the tradition it began and that produced the modern sciences, but what remains for it to do that its founders failed to should be its focus, not new fields of philosophy. Scientists can help out by using their real names, biologist, chemist not 'scientist’. I think it's right that Philosophy deals with what is necessarily true, and science deals with what is true. Another way of saying the same thing is that Philosophy deals with what is possible and science tries to determine which actual are possible. For this reason, Science needs philosophy because Science takes its assumptions about what is possible for granted. In short, there is great value in philosophy and much of philosophy is objective.
